Torreón, Coahuila, México: desert, sun and sky. A young city, recently celebrating its centennial, whose giddy economic development has converted it into one of the principal destinations of northern Mexico.
Located in the state of Coahuila at 25° 33’ N 103°28’W, along the border of the Nazas River, our city is the geographic center of the “Lagunera” region, conformed by three different cities: Torreón, Gómez Palacio and Lerdo, as well as 15 other localities.
Although the weather can be extreme, in Torreon the sun is rediscovered: the city bathed in sunshine has a temperature maintained between 30°C to 35°C during spring and autumn. In summer it rises to almost 45° C. Very few rains are registered and those which fall are often accompanied by dust storms, “tolvaneras” as they are locally called, referring to the wind creating landscapes which last only a few minutes. The reason for this climate is that the zone in which the city is settled is surrounded in its majority by chains of mountains that trap the humidity that escapes from The Sierra Madre Oriental. The area is also rich in mining, agriculture and one of the most important dairy regions of Mexico.
Torreón, since the foundation of the city, has been a region that nourishes from the products that our land gives us: cotton, wheat, beans and watermelon, as well as becoming one of the most important cattle zones in all of Mexico. The working of metals, through Met-Mex Peñoles and other companies, has conformed Torreon as one of the faster-growing cities in north of Mexico.
All these elements are encountered around the symbol of INTERCOM 2009, a Mayan glyph that is the representation of wind, sun and serpent, owners of the desert. In its forms we can find an ancient symbol of the dialogue, the encounter that produces knowledge and experience. In INTERCOM 2009 we will strive to join people of the entire world to mutually discover each other: our tastes, our achievements, our failures, forming a real international community in which, surrounded by the desert, ideas will bloom.
