Today, museums are institutions which are closely connected to their local communities, and also to many other agencies and organizations, local, regional, national and international. The museum is a field of encounter in which coexist a company, a school, a cultural center, an academy, a virtual site and a recreational space, which achieve to make of it a fundamental motor of the contemporary society. Being the Museum the common point of such diverse boundaries, produces wide and numerous questions: What nexus does the museum have with the different sectors of the society? How should the museum relate with its community? What aspects does it share with private companies? What links are there between the museums and the universities, the schools or the educative system in general? What nexus are there with the local and national governments, including the Tourism relations, Economic Development, Education, Parks and other nongovernmental organizations? What communication is established with other museums? How to look for audiences other than those which usually visit it? What role does the web perform to create virtual communities in different locations?
These days the museums must be thought of as civically engaged institutions. This means being close to other actors of the community, looking for a mutual understanding with them, to recognize the common preoccupations and the interest to cooperate in looking for solutions to problems in the benefit of everybody. A compromised museum is accessible to all the people, shares the authority among professionals, volunteers, friends and visitors, it is connected with the community and inspires a feeling of belonging and it is a safe place to express ideas. It must search to be outstanding, connecting with other museums and with the local community as well as globally.
The INTERCOM 2009, Museums, working in partnership Conference, will establish these questions and will give answers through presenters and national and international speakers of exceptional level, in order to initiate projects and share experiences around the two themes that involve us all: The Museums and the Community.
